Abstract

Scopo: Questo studio analizza le correlazioni tra work engagement e burnout negli infermieri italiani. Introduzione: La letteratura identifica il work engagement come fattore protettivo nei confronti del burnout. Questi due fenomeni risentono delle influenze culturali e organizzative della popolazione studiata che non permettono di generalizzarne i risultati. In Italia non sono stati condotti studi che mettessero in relazione questi fenomeni.

Metodo: Studio quantitativo osservazionale monocentrico. Sono stati somministrati ad un campione di convenienza di 318 infermieri di un ospedale italiano la Maslach Burnout Inventory e la Utrecht Work Engagement Scale per valutare i livelli di burnout e di work engagement e la correlazione tra di essi. I questionari sono stati somministrati tra il mese di luglio e agosto 2016. I dati sono stati analizzati per statistica descrittiva.

Risultati: I risultati relativi al work engagement hanno evidenziato un vigore medio (57.2%) e un coinvolgimento medio (48%). I risultai relativi al burnout ne hanno dimostrato alti livelli nell'esaurimento emotivo (55%) e nella depersonalizzazione (41,5%). È emersa una stretta e significativa correlazione tra le tre dimensioni del burnout e le tre dimensioni del work engagement (p ≤0,01). Si può ritenere pertanto che un livello elevato di work engagement riduca sensibilmente il livello di burnout.

Conclusioni: La correlazione tra Work Engagement e Burnout evidenziata negli infermieri italiani dovrebbe incoraggiare l'implementazione di strategie in grado di potenziare i livelli di work engagement al fine di contenere i livelli di burnout, migliorando il benessere degli operatori sanitari e influendo in maniera significativa sulla qualití  del processo assistenziale.

Correlation between Work Engagement and Burnout among Registered Nurses: an Italian hospital survey

Aim: To investigate the correlation between work engagement and burnout among Italian nurses.

Introduction: Work engagement is a protective factor against burnout. Both of them may be affected by the cultural and organizational features of the investigated population, which means that results cannot be generalized. In Italy studies to measure how they correlate have never been performed.

Methods: Monocentric and quantitative observational study. The Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were used on a convenience sample of 318 nurses from an Italian hospital to assess the burnout and work engagement levels and to measure the existing correlation between the two conditions. Results: Work engagement assessment highlighted average values of vigor (57.2%) and absorption (48%), while data referring to burnout demonstrated high levels of emotional exhaustion (55%) and depersonalization (41,5%). The three burnout dimensions and the three work engagement dimensions showed a close and meaningful correlation (p ≤0,01). A correlation between work engagement and burnout has been found.

Conclusions: The correlation between Work Engagement and Burnout highlighted in Italian nurses should encourage the implementation of strategies which may enhance work engagement levels to limit burnout, improving the well-being of healthcare workers and significantly influencing the quality of the care process.
